So what I want to talk about after our first class is design and its relation to the newspaper. Professor Strong briefly mentioned how outside of the U.S. there are lots of cool things happening in the field, and it reminded me of a video I watched as an undergrad in the newsroom.
I’ve put the link below, but it basically is this great European news desinger, Jacek Utko, talking at a TED conference about how design can save newspapers. His designs won him and his papers awards from SND and even bumped up circulation by 100% in certain countries.
So how does this apply to me? Well, for the Cazenovia project I initially thought, “Oh, I’m definitely going to do a magazine. I can be more creative and do more with a magazine.” But after that initial thought, I questioned myself. Why would it be more creative? I actually like designing newspapers and think I’m pretty good at it, but have always been trapped by the standards that are set in place by the industry or a particular business.
So, in the end, I decided this is a great opportunity for me to push those standards and explore being creative in newspapers. If it can work for Jacek, it can work for me too.
