Reflections – Buckle Up for a Exciting Semester

After taking graphic design last summer during bootcamp, I realized that I wanted to design more. I’m incredibly excited to take publication design this semester but also nervous. After reading the student reflections from last semester, here are the things that made the biggest impression on me.

Move on: This is a hard pill for me to swallow and something I have suffered from my entire academic career. Since I am a perfectionist, I tend to want to complete everything perfectly and am stubborn about changing ideas or moving on to something else. I have to remind myself to relax and be more open to different paths this semester.

Gather inspiration: A few students suggested looking at Pinterest, magazines, and other students’ work to inspire better designs. This will take more time and be a part of the thinking process, but I think that it will help me in the long run.

Push yourself out of your comfort zone: One student talked about executing a difficult idea that really challenged her for the better. I think it’s important for me to keep this in mind. This semester I’m going to try to not always take the easy route, but the one that will challenge me and help me grow the most.

I’m really excited to take publication design this semester because it is so different from all of my other classes. I am a writer at heart but I really want to be able to design. I think this class will be challenging in different ways and require me to think differently. After reading the reflections from last year’s class, I know I am in for an exciting adventure.

  1. I’m a writer at heart, too, Liz, so I know it’s not an obstacle but an advantage. Can’t wait to see what you produce.
