SND & Sydney // A Date with Design

What I learned this weekend: Though the news is supposed to be objective (which really doesn’t work), news design is completely subjective. This weekend, I saw countless talented individuals from world-class papers arguing over the tiniest aspects of design. What you think is good might not be what someone else thinks is great. In other words, design your heart out because at the end of the day it’s about telling the assigned story in a way that you think is most compelling. In this, I learned that the type of design that strikes me is bold, simple and colorful. This is also what I prefer in pictures as well. When talking to the judges, they seemed most impressed by the same thing. I noticed that they never picked up papers heavy with text, but ones with large photo illustrations, graphics and bold headlines. Based on the quality of worked turned in at this year’s conference, it seems that the industry is headed in an amazing direction. And the styles of design shown on the tables only suggests that we have some pretty beautiful newspapers spread out across the world. I only wish my hometown paper looked like the Times of Oman. Something that scared me was the amount of time and work it takes to make these graphics. I wonder if these people have a life outside of work? Certainly the young professionals might not at first, but it seems that the ideal job in news design would be a director, someone who oversees the putting together of the final pages. I don’t consider myself a designer but someone who is inherently interested in design and how it’s made. I’m more like an observer and enthusiast. In this way, I think it would be pretty cool to be a director of some sort. For example, I was most attracted to the pages that showcased or had to do with architecture, building design or city issues. I found some beautiful ways these stories were crafted in my photographs below. If I had to choose a career in news design, I would love to oversee the packaging of stores in the home, city or arts section of a newspaper. As an arts journalist, I think this is something I’m naturally drawn too. Yes, it’s incredibly important to design world news for A1 in a compelling way, but the opportunity to put together a package for the arts sections – something that is art itself – seems like a rewarding job.

This is a great headline and way to draw in the reader to an interesting debate about the Mall.

This pretty much explains it. So classy.

Most Compelling Photo // Bad Thinking:

This spread has great photography in general but each image was extremely compelling with great composition and lighting.

I absolutely hate the interconnected hair on these Mean Girls.

Innovative Thinking:

This Times of Oman piece was highly debated among judges for a medal. It was all about the text, the drop cop and the use of space.

Best Magazine Cover:

Obviously, I'm a little biased but this is a really striking photo for me. I would definitely pick up this magazine based on the cover.

WILD CARD:

I LOVE THIS. This South China Morning Post graphic profiles the world's tallest buildings over certain periods of time to show what the culture values. (Currently, office buildings = economy = $$.)

Favorite Foreign Language Paper:

I am now slightly obsessed with this Argentinian architectural newspaper called ARQ. I got studied Spanish in college and am in love with the language. The combination of Spanish and architecture is a win/win for me!

Trend I noticed:

Large photos! Even newspaper spreads are taking on larger and larger images these days. Makes things very compelling.
