What I Learned: I think the biggest take away from last weekend is my new insight on what it means to actually critically look at design. And not just to look at it, but to challenge it, to push it, and to raise expectations. I’m not sure I understood each and every reason why certain newspapers were thrown in the “loser” piles, but I do understand that it’s not because they were actual losers; rather it’s because they didn’t quite push the envelope the same way competing papers did.
By being able to listen to the award discussions, I really got a feel for the depth of certain designs and for the feelings they can evoke. I’m looking forward to the time when I’ll be able to understand and speak the design language that I heard last weekend, but until then, I sincerely appreciate having been exposed to it.
On top of the experience, I think it’s so great we had the opportunity to sift through the pile to snatch our favorites because now I have the chance to compare, push, and challenge my own designs.
