I think the concept that designers are visual journalists gets lost with the title “designer.” It’s easy to forget that although you are not writing the articles or taking the pictures, the designer is as much a part of the process of journalism as anyone else.
This concept was something I had forgotten. I had forgotten that regardless of if I have a byline, that I am too a journalist. I think designers forget that. As designers we get lost in the idea of being an artist, someone who creates visually appealing things that make reading a newspaper more appealing. (At least that’s what I had thought for a long time.) But instead we forget that we are the last stop on the journalism road. We put everything together and make it work. We bring stories and words to life.
We are visual journalists.
