TIME magazine does a great job in its use of space and it makes use of the space because it is a weekly magazine.
Format:
The size of the magazine is about the average size of most magazines and it the magazine does not weigh that much. Since the magazine is kind of small, it allows someone to carry the magazine from place to place. The average page count of the magazine all depends on a certain occasion, topic or issue. In its most recent issue the page count is 56 pages and that would continue in most of its issues throughout the year. One example that would break the 56 page count would have to be the December 25, 2017/January 1, 2018 issue which gives a preview in what to look for in the upcoming year. The page count in that issue is over 100. In this case in relation to space the magazine has to up its page count to make sure it has room for all of its content.
Grid:
To have a 11 by 17 margin for a single page tells me that the magazine makes use of the large space that it is available. A way the magazine does this is by incorporating words, photos and graphics to tell a story without even going to the next page. The page design helps me to keep reading more and more from the magazine. Same thing with columns in each issues of the magazine. In the current issue of the magazine the average column number would have to 2 to 3 columns which would include a photo/ photos and include a little sneak peak to what the issue of the magazine is going to be about. In other issues of the magazine the columns would be more like 5. Also the publication kind of uses the rule of thirds in how they place certain photos on a page to get the reader engaged. One example would be photo of vice president Pence and president Trump talking and not having them directly in the center of the page.
Layout and white space:
The layout of the publication would have to be very simple but the magazine makes it different. Instead of listing the table of contents in how someone would see in a book, the magazine takes a creative twist with it by having a photo and text that goes with the overall theme of the magazine. On average, TIME magazine has 3 to 5 stories, a personal essay or opinion towards the back of the publication, an entertainment section and a fun facts section with short news blurbs in the layout. An example of when the publication breaks this rule would be special issues in which there are more than 5 stories in the publication. The average number of photos would be more that 5 on a page and over 25 are used throughout the publication plus depending if the magazine is special edition. In relation to the white space throughout the publication, the magazine uses white space very well in the publication. In Love it Leave it section of the magazine, it plays with white space by using photos. graphics and text. Finally the publication uses photos as a timeline at the bottom of the big stories to break up some of the text and to get myself as reader to get a break from reading the story and to get informative information that would be related to the topic.
Final thoughts:
In closing TIME magazine does a great job with space. It does this by using its space wisely depend on the theme of the magazine and what audience they are going for in each issue. The magazine does great job by leaving room for my eyes to wander and to write little notes if I read something interesting. Finally, the magazine uses space that is not text heavy but a mix of photos and graphics.
