You only live once (book by Lonely Planet) – Organization

Book cover

The cover has white background and uses images of travel items to surround the book title which makes the readers eyes go straight to the title. Although i think there are too many items that it looks a bit crowded but it still has equal balance overall; as shown it has dark colored, rectangular shape on both left and right side of the title being the passport and the camera. Having the title at the center of the book with the travel items pointing towards the center further emphasizes the book title.

With one glance you can tell that this is a fun, casual travel book rather than heavy-topic book. The items used show varieties of adventures around the world shown by stamps, money, chopsticks, and other items that represent different cities/countries or culture.

All items on the cover serves its function of being a travel book very well. The reader can tell that this is going to be a collection of adventures based from varieties of items, the title, and its tagline.

The theme is consistent throughout the book, with around several template layout but 4-5 solid templates shown below.

Each section starts with a 2 page spread and large font of the section name that cover both pages. However, with the thickness of the book and its book binding technique causes difficulty to read the title; the word cannot be seen clearly as shown above, AN HOUR, A WEEK  and A DAY.

After the 2 page spread of the chapter title, the following 2 pages will list the topics that the chapter covers.

When starting a new topic, it often features a big photo which cover more than a page, and bold title in the middle of the remaining white space with 2 paragraphs of the article and followed by 4 famous places under the topic.

Another common layout is a 1 page spread or 2 page spread with big photo and a caption.

The placement of a new topic often stands alone with  bigger space between the title and the dek than the space between the dek and the article. Each chapter is defined by putting the chapter name in the lower corner of the right page of the 2 page spread. The  very small page number appear on only some pages in the lower middle of the page. There are a total of 336 pages in the book.

The article is easy to follow from how it’s organized and the use of bold fonts to categorize the hierarchy. It often starts with bolder and bigger font for the title, still bold but smaller font for the dek and small regular font for the article. This applied through out the book whether its the articles, the content page or photos with caption.

The 3 main colors used in the books are green, blue and orange. These colors associate with freshness, calm and happiness. The tone overall is adventurous yet sophisticated by the use of space and typography. While the arrangement are simple, some titles have more creativity by playing with the topic and decorated with illustrations, or the layout of the letters/words itself.
